After a weeklong celebration of fashion hosted by a true Christchurch institution Ballantynes, the best was saved for last with its closing runway at the Contemporary Lounge. Marking the lounge’s 10th anniversary, New Zealand fashion icons including Kathryn Wilson, Karen Walker, Steve Dunstan, Liam Bowden alongside fellow Aussie fashion visionary Marc Freeman all came together to reveal their brand-new collections.
While the Ballantynes team worked hard adding finishing touches behind the scenes, I sat down with each of the designers to discuss all things life and fashion (I am talking anything from skiing, inspiration, to dreams and branding). What struck me was how similar each of the fashion maker’s personal view of their brand and its vision was with my very own interpretation of a label’s point of view. The distinctive stories of how and why a label came to life and the way a designer intends a piece of clothing to make you feel once again gives the idea of fashion so much more depth and personality. With the world of fashion often being portrayed as rather illusive and clichéd, meeting some extremely hard-working, astute and approachable people from within the industry was not only inspiring, but, more importantly, very refreshing and reassuring. Naturally, I took a closer look at what was showcased on the runway and captured a few of my favourite looks to share with you.
Which look do you like best?
