Checking In – Estalagem Ponta Do Sol, Madeira
At first glance, this high-concept hotel, perched like a stork’s nest atop a rugged cliff edge, doesn’t seem the easiest to reach. On a second thought, you will soon wish your stay was longer. The light aesthetics and breezy rooms overlooking the blue Madeiran waters or those of the casually spectacular infinity pool quickly transport you into another world. One of poetic conversations over long lunches that turn into dinners. One of leisurely day-walks through rainforests and up mountains followed by dramatic sunset aperitifs. One of dancing to world-class outdoor concerts with your new Portuguese friends.
You see where I am going. It’s hard to believe spectacular Estalagem Ponta Do Sol was once the modest home of the local sugarcane boss.
As one of the finest examples of unapologetic modern architecture on the island of Madeira, this boutique hotel boasts a modern art collection, a 24h honesty bar, a cosy (read small) panoramic gym, a beautifully laid-out sauna and spa area and a restaurant you simply cannot miss. Prices start at 80 to 90 euros, making it excellent value for money. It’s a 20 minutes ride from Madeira’s main town Funchal. Ideally, you’d rent a car and drive yourself to Ponta Do Sol (free guest parking). From there, day trips galore await. Airport pickups and almost all activities imaginable from diving to canoeing will be happily organised.

Early morning sunrise swims, friendly and personable service, a pure and curated aesthetic, generous breakfasts and mouth-watering feasts with the sunset as a backdrop make Estalagem Ponta Do Sol one of the most perfect hideaways I ever had the opportunity to visit. Don’t miss out!
