Look of the Week – The Heart of Fashion
Having talked about the art of fashion last week, this week’s look is about the emotional side of it. The one that brings back memories and makes you feel a certain way. I’m currently adventuring around Bali and the clothes I managed to fit into my carry-on backpack prepare me to explore. I’m not talking beige multi-purpose zip-off pants. It’s the backless fringe top or the full print jumpsuit making me feel free and ready to wander exotic rainforests and deserted beaches. Back in New Zealand, however, spring is about to blossom, so before I jumped on the plane to Indonesia, I took the last chance to layer up and play with experimental cuts and bold colours – which is at the heart of fashion.
For this outfit, I had the opportunity to shoot this incredible red coat, which is a truly unique piece to one of my gorgeous friends. It beholds some distinct memories of its original owner, her grandma. You see, the heart of fashion is also about the values and memories a single piece of clothing can pass on through generations. It connects, and it moves. Fashion also surprises. Which is why I decided to pair it with an unusual cut by one of New Zealand’s most experimental yet wearable womenswear brands. Its loose shape and snug fabric won me over immediately. The shoes add a well-needed contemporary twist, while the bag – well, what’s there not to love about this bag?!
What do you think about this look? Do you have a special piece of clothing that reminds me you of someone else or distinct memory yourself?
